A rough translation
of Moore’s law states that computing processing power will
double every 2 years and half in size. Given that this been the
case for many years now, it would seem reasonable to assume that
our data centres should be at least half empty?
The reality is that even although the power increase is dramatic
it is not keeping abreast of business demand for additional systems
complexity and faster response times which mean that space utilisation
in our Data Centres is at a premium. Given the significant up front
cost of building or adding Data Centre space and the ever decreasing
cost and increasing reliability of wide area network connections,
every IT Department should question the need for their own Data
Centre. The reality is that there is now a strong financial and
service related business case for freeing up this expensive in-house
space and moving the equipment to a hosted Data Centre where the
extremely expensive infrastructure costs and expert resources are
shared with others.
